Seismology is the study of how the ground moves, in the more dangerous ways. It is the study of earthquakes and things that result from earthquakes, like landslides or tsunamis. Many seismologists work in the field of “petroleum exploration”, which is a fancier way of saying that they help find oil underground. Some seismologists also study natural disasters, and figure out why they happen, and help predict the next time they will happen, along with how dangerous it might be.

Education Required:
- Most have a master’s degree in geophysics, geology, or a related STEM subject
(although some entry-level jobs might be available for those with a bachelor’s degree)
Working Environment
- Seismologists usually in offices or labs, and they occasionally travel to seismic sites to do fieldwork
- Most work full time, with a standard work week (8 hrs a day, 5 days a week)
- (although times might be longer while doing fieldwork, or during public emergencies related to seismic events like earthquakes, volcano eruptions, etc.)
Skills Required/ Needed
- Critical thinking & problem-solving skills.
-Ability to work independently
Fun Facts
- Instruments used by seismologists can pick up vibrations from underground nuclear tests!
