Learn About the Process of Photosynthesis

What is photosynthesis?

First, lets start off by breaking the physical word into 2 parts: "Photo" and "synthesis". Photo means light and synthesis means to combine or put together. Plants do need need other people or objects to make food for them. Plants make their own food by themselves. The simple definition of photosynthesis is the process by which plants make their own food to grow.

For photosynthesis to occur, however, plants need more than just sunlight. Plants need carbon dioxide and water as well. Carbon dioxide from the air goes into the plant through these small pores called the stomata. The root absorbs water in the soil and pushes it through to the leaves. The sunlight is absorbed by a green chemical called chlorophyll(essential for photosynthesis). The energy from the sunlight is used to break down water(H2O) into hydrogen and oxygen.

Oxygen is released from the plant and hydrogen and carbon dioxide is used to produce glucose(food for plants). Glucose is used to help plants grow and develop. We also gain some energy from it as well when we eat fruits. Now we know that photosynthesis is the process in which plants make their own food using carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight and produce glucose and oxygen.

The process of photosynthesis is essential for plant growth and plants are essential for life. Learn more about the importance of plants here: click me.
